The better your photo the better your KnitPic Kit pattern! We recommend using a high-quality photo, with plenty of light and dark contrast and the face is in focus. Upload JPEG and PNG from your local files, Facebook, Google Drive, Google Photos, Dropbox, Instagram, Evernote, Flickr or OneDrive and we’ll take care of the rest. Here are a few tips that will get the best results:
DO
- Use photos with good lighting
- Shadows and highlights are good for definition
- High resolution and in focus
- Head and shoulder close ups
DON'T
- Use photos that are too dark or too light
- Lack of contrast
- Low resolution and blurry
- Photos taken from far away

The KnitPic kit is the best new product I have seen in many years of knitting. Not only is the photo very comparable to the knitted item, the written pattern and chart provided are 100 % accurate. The amount of bobbins provided make it easy to use and change several colours at the same time, and plenty of yarn is provided to finish the project. This is a great product for a gift or just for personal use and lots of fun to watch the picture developing in knitted form.

I’m finding it a very enjoyable knit! The yarn feels nice to work with, and because it’s so much more challenging than what I usually knit, I feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment as it works up and starts to really look like the photo!

Most proud moment of my life, who wouldn’t want to have a knitted portrait of themselves. I feel as though I’ve made it now!
I’m a beginner knitter will I manage to tackle this project?
The good news is that there are only knit and purl stitches in the pattern so it’s nice and straightforward. But if you’ve not discovered the joy of colour work this may seem a bit challenging at first and we would recommend you choose a 3 colour pattern to cut your teeth on. Or why not try our Beginner's Alphabet Cushion KnitPic Kit which will introduce you to the intarsia method and arm you with some skills to knit your first KnitPic kit.
What do I do if I need help?
We have a suite of instructional videos to guide you through every step of the process here: https://www.knit-it.co.uk/pages/tips-and-advice
How long will it take for my kit to arrive?
Please allow 2-5 working days for your order to be processed for shipping. And a further 2-3 working days for UK delivery. International shipping is longer. We make every effort to fulfill orders as quickly as possible and you can read more about our shipping policy here: https://www.knit-it.co.uk/policies/shipping-policy (Please note that during the covid-19 pandemic, deliveries may take longer than expected to arrive!!)
How do I decide how many colours to choose?
The more colours in the KnitPic Kit, the bigger the challenge. The number of colours also offer a different visual effect:
Colours: The 3 colour KnitPic Kit, our easiest project has a abstract pop art look using unexpected colours. The 4 colour KnitPic Kit is more complex and produces a more defined image. This involves a little bit more skill. The 5 colour KnitPic Kit gives the most realistic contemporary representation of your photograph and is the most challenging knit!
Monochrome: The monochrome KnitPic Kits in 3, 4 & 5 colours options give a more sophisticated look that will compliment most décor. Removing colour from the face allows the viewer to focus on the image without distraction, whilst the colourful background then brings the bling to the party!
Do I need any equipment/supplies for this project?
You will be supplied with a pattern, chart, guide, yarn & bobbins, all you will need is your own needles.
Is there enough yarn to knit both sides of a cushion?
Yes, if you decide to make a cushion we have supplied enough yarn for both sides. We have provided free sample patterns for the back of the cushion above. If you decide to turn this into a wall art, you will need to mount this onto a canvas or a frame which are not supplied.
Can you knit this project on circular needles?
This project can be knitted on either straight or circular needles. Circular needles may arguably have a slight advantage, in that, by the nature of them, knitting comes out ever so slightly looser than straight needles which is an advantage when doing colour stranded work. As for our team, half of us prefer using straight needles and half circular needles!
Do I need to knit a gauge first?
Yes. The pattern is measured to fit a 40cm x 40cm cushion pad so checking your gauge is important. If you're not sure how to do this we have a video to show you how here: https://www.knit-it.co.uk/pages/tips-and-advice
Are the patterns difficult to read or understand?
Being just knit and purl stitch, the patterns are easy to understand. All you have to do is pay attention to colour - this is where the chart comes in handy, so that you can visually see what is coming next! We also supply a traditional written pattern, and we find most people like to use both when following the pattern!
Why is my pattern a rectangle when the dimensions are for a square?
In knitting, a stitch does not have square proportions, this means that when you knit a piece, say 10 stitches by 10 rows, you will not get a square as your finished piece. This is because the width of your stitch is not the same measurement as the height of your stitch (row). We have created the pattern so that the number of stitches and rows knitted will produce a square finished piece. So the pattern may look like an odd shape but rest assured you will end up with the correct square shape, promise!
What if I don’t know how to do a particular stitch?
We have on hand video tutorials, to guide you through each process of the KnitPic kit here: https://www.knit-it.co.uk/pages/tips-and-advice
Do you recommend weaving in your ends before blocking?
There are no set rules on this but it probably makes more sense to weave in your ends once you have blocked your piece and the fabric has relaxed into its shape, that way you will end up with the best results for your finished masterpiece.
Why are your colour schemes named after people?
At Knit It, community is one of our big values, and we believe in being compassionate and caring to people and the world around us. Our colour schemes are named after the special people who have helped us on our journey and get to where we are today! A big shout out to all of them!
